Mujeres Writing Contest 2009 - Guidelines & Application Form

Sowing the Seeds, a collective of women writers based in Tucson, Arizona sponsored a writing contest for women of all ages living in the Southwest. 

 

Winning entries were selected in 3 categories—poetry, personal essay, and memoir to be published in Sowing the Seeds anthology, “Our Spirit, Our Reality.” Suggested topics were: Reality of Life, Relationships, Emotions, Spiritual, Self-Image, Transformations, Our Relationship to Nature. Winners retained all rights to their work. 

 

Deadline for contest was November 15, 2009

Criteria for applicants: All manuscripts must adhere to the guidelines outlined below:


  • Applicants must submit ORIGINAL WORK ONLY!
  • Applicants must complete the official application form and include it with their entry as a cover sheet. Multiple entries are acceptable but each must have an entry form and entry fee.
  • Entry should be double-spaced on one side of white 81/2” by 11” paper, one inch margins, use black font 12 point Times New Roman or Courier. Poetry may be single-spaced.
  • Entry must have title in upper left hand corner of every page, all pages numbered, stapled, and should NOT include applicant’s name.
  • Applicants should submit 3 copies of their work. No email submissions.
 

Because no manuscripts will be returned, the applicant should retain a copy.

Only winners will be notified. Winners will be published on our website http://sowingtheseedsdetucson.org/ and in local newspapers.

Entry/reading fees

Poems –$5 (3 for $10) Personal essays & Memoir - $10

Subject matter must fit the theme of “Our Spirit, Our Reality.” See suggested topics here.

 

Poetry: Up to three poems in any form(s), but limited to thirty lines each. Submissions will be judged by skillful use of language.


Personal Essay & Memoir: Entries are limited to no less than two and no more than five pages. Submissions will be judged on quality of work, mechanics of language, and content.
