Elena Díaz Bjorkquist


 

Elena is also a founding member of Sowing the Seeds. She is the author of Suffer Smoke and Water from the Moon and coediter with Rosi Andrade, Sowing the Seeds, una cosecha de recuerdos. Elena writes poetry, memoir, plays, and short stories.

Elena is also an artist, specializing in clay sculpture, painting, and making mini-books. She enjoys teaching workshops in writing, pottery, bookmaking, and drum making. Elena is a member of the Arizona Humanities Council Speakers Bureau and does presentations about her hometown Morenci, Arizona. She also does a Chautauqua living history presentation as Teresita Urrea, a curandera from the 1900’s.

A SIROW Scholar, Elena has maintained her interest in historical research by completing two projects sponsored by SIROW. In the Shadow of the Smokestack, is an oral history of Mexican Americans living in Morenci during the Depression and World War II. Tubac 1880’s Schoolhouse is a collection of lesson plans for teachers who take their students to the schoolhouse. Both projects are online on her website.

She is married to Kurt and they have three children, six grandchildren, and their dog Tito.
